Flower Vendor, Jam Maker, Friend…Sasha Kanno-Wrigley Garden, has another fabulous project cooking right now and she needs our support. Her new organization is Long Beach Local, and she is starting a farm! Farm Lot 59. The name comes from old Long Beach palt maps and represent the original farm lot numbers. The city was actually full of farms back in the day.

It seems that the silver lining of these tough times is the need for folks to get a little more real. People start looking at ways to be frugal and make better choices on all purchases. Growing your own food, keeping chickens, cooking and living the lessons of the farm. The lack of interest in new construction allows gardens and green space to pop up all over. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times….

Well, I think times are exciting and right now there is real opportunity to do good work. We are making connections and creating a city filled with interesting and thoughtful people of like minds. Long lasting and meaningful relationships create meaningful and long lasting projects. From school lunch reform and urban farms, to rain barrels and drought tolerant garden incentives.

Read a brief description of Sasha’s project below and then go watch the video. Share the kickstarter link with everyone and then make a pledge!

by Sasha Kanno, Long Beach Local-

I’m very excited to update you on the progress of the urban farm. On Thursday June 17th the Parks, Recreation and Marine Commissioners voted to approve and issue a right-of-entry permit to Long Beach Local for the use of 2712 California Avenue for the purpose of providing a one-acre urban farm and mulch yard. We got the farm!

With the land secured and the vision laid out now its time to get to work. Our vision is to create an urban/ rural connection within the local community and Farm Lot 59 will accomplish this in Long Beach.

As the Farm grows, so will the need for employees, creating green jobs in Long Beach. The Farm will require labor to plant, harvest, process and take produce to market. Green jobs such as program director, farm operator, produce stand manager, events coordinator, master composter are envisioned and additional support services such as website hosting and maintenance, newsletter, and bookkeeper will be required. There are also opportunities for entry‐level jobs and internships. And don’t forget we want to train young farmers. The farming industry has a very large generational gap the average farmer aged 55 or older has grown from 37% to over 60% in the last 60 years. Farm Lot 59 will be a local training ground for youth who want to continue in this trade and be able to make a living wage while doing what they love.

Farm Lot 59 will serve as an educational resource for the Long Beach community. Children, along with their parents and teachers can come and learn about urban farming and earth’s ecosystems. Children will be able to meet chickens, explore the farming operation, and identify bugs and flowers. Nutrition education is an important component to the Farm. Start them early! Young children love to eat their fruits and vegetables when they are exposed to good fresh produce and participate in the process of growing. Entire families will learn how to shop on a budget and prepare meals at home. If you have interest in this aspect of the Farm please let us know. We are in the developing stages of this program.

A portion of the of the proposed Farm Lot 59 will be designated as the Municipal Mulch Pile, this will be our citywide composting and soil making facility. No more driving to San Pedro! The City of Long Beach along with restaurants and residents can bring their green waste to be composted. There will also be mulch provided by the City’s Office of Sustainability Mulch‐a‐lot program. Successful gardening begins with healthy soil. Please let us know if you would like to be one of the first to get involved in this great program.

But all of these things will not be possible without funding. Please help us fund our project at Kickstarter, tell your friends and make this part of the community.

Kickstarter Project – Farm Lot 59

Kickstarter is a platform that helps people crowd-source funding for projects. It works like this: you launch a project, if enough people commit to financially backing your project by the target date, then the project gets funded and the backers recieve prizes. If the target amount isn’t met, the project does not get funded and backers are not responsible for their pledges. So please help us spread the word.

Thank you to everyone who has helped get us this far. You are all much appreciated and loved. See you in the fields!

Every Sunday is a great day for the kids at the market, but this Sunday is going to be extra special! Every Sunday the entire market in on a playground so it has a safe and family friendly vibe going in. We always have the kinder playground open, you can always buy a piece of delicious fruit or grab a snack for a buck, and the wide aisles are a huge plus for the strollers and wagons.

This Sunday May 30th at 9am, we will have a mini kids fair opening with a drum circle!! So head over to the grass area in the kinder playground just to the left of the entrance and join the party! Drum circle hosted by Jammin’ Music. There will also be information about the store and Jammin’ Music’s summer music camps and lessons.

Avery Boo, will be in the house!! CREATE BUILD IMAGINE
Averyboo Arts is a creativity center and gallery for children 18mo to 10 years old. In addition to art enrichment classes and birthday parties, they offer ‘Open Studio’; where children can spend their time exploring our various creativity stations including easel painting, open supply case, craft tables, a variety of building blocks, art appreciation installations, dress-up with mini stage, and more. They also have an indoor “chalk walk” where kids can literally draw on the walls! Parent: they have comfortable seating and free wifi!!

Pixie Toys will also be out with a fine selection of toys and activities and if you need photos or albums you have to check out Vangie’s work! Ogg Studio is a great place for a sitting, or go on location with Vangie…your house, the beach, Union Station even the alley!! Her work is amazing!!

Children’s Books! Our farmers market book stand, Gatsby’s Books is put together by Longfellow dad, Sean Moor. He will be bringing a special collection of children’s books out this Sunday as well. He has a terrific inventory of classic and collectible books…you won’t want to miss his booth!!

And because we love kids, we are launching a new kids dollar menu!! There are lots of choices for $1, $2 and $3, and we are working with all our vendors to make sure there is a nice selection of items for the whole family. We know it can get expensive to buy food out, and we know everyone is starving after the Sunday morning activities – so here you go!!

Shortnin’ Bread has a homemade biscuit with locally made jam – $2

Salsa Anytime is serving a small bean and cheese burrito – $1

Ari’s Foods is doing a cup of hummus and pita chips – $1

Song’s Crepes’ has three different mini crepes for $2 each!!

Fresh Fruit Juice – several flavors of freshly packaged juice 16 ounces for only $3

Freshly Made Mini Donuts, Kettle Corn, Breads, Cookies, Nachos, Fresh Fruit…$1, $2, $3

The new Long Beach Sunday Market in California Heights is located on the playground of Longfellow Elementary School. The street address of the school is 3800 Olive Avenue Long Beach, CA 90807 – but the market is actually held on the opposite side of the school off of California Avenue at Bixby Road on the playground.

Recipe alert!! Needed lunch fast. So I threw an Atlantic Wild Salmon filet into a hot heavy skillet with a couple tablespoons of olive oil, skin side down. Turn around, ignore the pan while smashing 4 cloves of garlic. Place a bunch of asparagus in a bowl of water and microwave for 1 minute (I know, I used the mircrowave!) but like I said I was in a hurry. So now the salmon is almost done, it’s been like 4 minutes. I throw the garlic and asparagus in to the pan and top with copious amounts of the Syrian Zataar seasoning. Delicious healthy lunch in less than 10 minutes. For a fast meal the spice blends are really making my day!! They can make your day too, just swing by their booth tomorrow and check it out. They are located by the North gate and Peanut Dudes.

Long Beach Water Department-A representative from the LB Water will be out to talk about conservation. There is a lot of excitement in the city with regard to drought tolerant lawns and grants. This is the time to get rid of those lawns!

Goodwill Shred 4-Good, will stop by and pass out info about their shredding and recycling programs. Please stop by and tell them how much we would like them to host an event at the market in May!!

Worm Farmer-our very own neighborhood worm farmer! Leilani lives in the neighborhood and is farming worms for vermiposting bins!! She is currently the only local supplier of worms. Don’t mail order worms for your backyard bins. Stop by and get a lesson, check out sample bins and get started on your own black gold for the garden.

Beyond Bok Choy-please take a look at the selection of greens they are bringing in from Fresno! All bunches are only $1 and you can fill your crisper with fabulous ingredients for the entire week of sauces, marinades and side dishes!

Frutos Farms-I am looking forward to the best of season strawberries tomorrow. We are in high season for the ruby gems, and they are best this time of year! Also, if they have asparagus, grab it! Might be getting close to the end of the season.

Gama Farms-a new heart healthy breakfast is just plain roasted sweet potatoes! Salt and a turn or two of pepper and you’re all set.

Park Fruit-Apple Slaw is one of the best for you and tastiest sides of all! If you have a great dressing – email me so we can share the recipe!!

The full report of this week’s market posted tomorrow night. Thanks for checking in! See you out there…
