Longfellow Elementary

Longfellow’s Green Team is beginning the process of  expanding from its Friday bottle and can recycling program to an integrated,  campus-wide approach to recycling.  Students, led by the school’s Student  Council and Green Team members, have recently begun to focus on recycling all  the paper that is generated by the school’s students and teachers.  Also,  with the help of parent volunteers and the school’s playground supervisors,  Longfellow students have started collecting Capri Sun and other juice pouches, along with Frito Lay brand chip bags, as a new way to raise money for the  school and keep these items out of the landfill.  They are sent to  Terracycle, which “up cycles” them into backpacks, pencil cases and other  products sold at major U.S. retail stores, while paying the school for each  juice pouch and chip bag collected.  Other items, such as candy wrappers  and energy bar wrappers, will be added to this collection program soon.   Anyone wishing to donate Frito Lay chip bags or juice pouches to  Longfellow’s Green Team is welcome to drop them at the school office during  the week or at Longfellow’s booth at the Sunday market.

The Green  Team will also be fundraising through the sale of Chico Bags at the  Sunday market. Come and check them out! They fit in your pocket or  purse, or attach to a belt loop, so you’ll never be without a bag  again!
