Some of the best days of summer are Wednesday evening concerts at Los Cerritos Park. We know the Municipal Band will be there along with thousands of your best friends, friends of friends, family, and neighbors. We know they will be there without calling, texting, tweeting or major planning. Beginning in November, the Sunday before Thanksgiving, we will have yet another place to meet and recapture that wholesome small town feeling we enjoy, a weekly Sunday Community & Farmers Market.
Made possible through a grant from the Connected Corridor Project, The Long Beach Sunday Market in California Heights will be held every Sunday from 9am to 2pm at Longfellow Elementary. The theme of the market is sustainability, of the schools, of the environment, and our sense of community and civic engagement. In addition, this is a fund raising project for the local schools!
The market will feature the basic and then some. Farmers with fresh produce, lots of ready to eat food vendors, a coffee cart, the tot lot, and a chess club. Where we go from there is the really fun part. Workshops in art, gardening, cooking and recycling will feature local experts. on hand to share their knowledge. If you would like to teach a class, go to the about page and send the market manager a note with WORKSHOPS in the subject line. For example, Hughes Goes Green will be teaching us all about the importance of trash, where it goes, where we should put it and how not create it.
The market is an opportunity for folks from all the surrounding neighborhoods to come out and play. Eat, shop, get to know and support each other, to build an Uptown Coalition. Become a market sponsor, so we can send more money directly to the local schools. Buy some Girl Scout cookies, sponsor a few laps for a school jog a thon, buy tickets for a carnival. Or just sip on a big cuppa joe while playing chess with a neighbor.
