Choi to the World!

December 3, 2009

A facebook post on Asian Greens coming this Sunday to the market served up this gem – “Choi to the World” is hands down my favorite comment! Love it – that is going to be my Christmas Card greeting this year. Gotta get on overnight prints right now!! So yes, that’s right let them eat choi! We are welcoming another new farmer to the market this Sunday with 40′ of Asian Greens! All the way from Fresno, so let’s get the word out! I would love it if you could tell the chefs and owners of all your favorite Thai, Vietnamese, Cambodian, & Chinese Restaurants that they should come and see what these specialty farmers are bringing down to the LBC. I think this town can support a great selection of Asian specialty items…just need to spread the word.

If you would like to try your hand at growing some of your own choi, check out Kitazawa Seeds they have a great selection of all kids of Asian Greens and warm climate lettuces. Order now-for spring germination for your early summer crops. You’ll be amazed at the interesting varieties.

Last week we already welcomed 6 new farmers, and they have not yet gotten the full embrace from our neighborhood, because of the holiday. I will try to spotlight their products and post some recipes. Great stuff available. Frutos’ apples are crisp and sweet, really great right now.

Gama brought the eggs and quince. Speaking of quince, a new staple item at my house is Huckleberry’s Quince and Goat Cheese Tart. Pastry Chef Zoe Nathan relayed the basic instructions while walking around the Santa Monica Farmers Market, and can be found here. It sounded amazing and was, it comes out great every time! Chef Paul Buchanan from Primal Alchemy, suggested a little black pepper in the pie dough, which I will try next time. More info and links on Quince, can be found at Green Acres. Our very own pastry chef, Justina Fenton of Shortnin’ Bread added a drizzle of Blueberry Agave Syrup for a delicious twist. Stop by her stand at the market. It’s red and white and yummy all over! And remember to keep twisting & tweaking your recipes until you find the perfect combo…sometimes the best new version is a result of just using what you have on hand.

A few of the Agricultural Products you will find at the market right now include:

Avocados, Honey

Eggs, Potatoes, Onions, Garlic, Shallots, Leeks

Citrus, Oranges, Lemons, Limes, Tangerines

Quince, Pomegranates, Apples, Asian Pears, Berries, Pears

Fruit Trees, Herbs and flowers

Lettuce, Greens, Broccoli, Cauliflower

See for yourself! See you at the market-
