Green Garlic!

March 11, 2010

I have been singing the praises of green garlic for a few weeks now.  Today the LA Times food section has a nice story on spring ingredients from the Farmers Markets, featuring green garlic and favas.

Beyond Bok Choy brings green garlic to our market on Sundays!  Please check out his stand for the green garlic, lemon grass, choys, herbs, sugar cane, leeks and spring onions just to name a few of the treasures growing on his farm.  It is a real treat to have this category of farmer at our market so check out their offerings and make a purchase so they will know we want them to stick around!  It’s a little early in the season for many of their vegetables, but just you wait until summer!

The Long Beach Public Library Foundation’s annual event, Long Beach Reads One Book-touched down at the Cal Heights Sunday Market this past weekend!  It was an honor to host the All Day Read and we are already looking forward to next year.  A big huge thank you to Sean Moor (of Bixby Books at the market), for organizing and overseeing the day.  We almost made it through the entire book, with readers lined up all day for their 10 minutes at the microphone.

Librarians, teachers, principals, poets, students, literary society members, neighbors and even a 1st grader read aloud from this year’s selection – The Soloist.  It has inspired us to start a book club, story time and all day reads of our own.  Next up?  You tell us!  Stop by the Bixby Books booth and suggest a book, sign up for book club and for the next read aloud event.

Fat Tuesday!

February 16, 2010

It’s Mardi Gras time!  I love flipping through the old Gourmet Mags to get the creative juices flowing.  The vintage graphics and old school cuisine are always inspiring – somehow modern and current, while maintaining that retro vibe.  I love to take the ingredient list and add a “culinary update”, but traditional flavors are traditional [...]

Market and Garden Inspiration

February 6, 2010

The Gourmet Magazine November 1956 cover art is one of my favorites.  Illustrated by Hilary Knight, who is most famous for the Eloise series.  He also drew for Leo Lionni (Swimmy) and Peg Bracken’s hilarious, I Hate to Cook Book and many many Gourmet magazine covers.  The old Gourmet mag covers are great, but the [...]
